Secretary General of the Turkic Council Baghdad Amreyev attended the 6th UN Istanbul Mediation Conference
6th Istanbul Mediation Conference held on 31 October 2019 in Istanbul under the theme of “International Peace Mediation: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead” with the participation and keynote speeches by H.E.Mr. Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General and H.E.Mevlut Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

The members of the UN Secretary General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation, such as Ms. Tarja Halonen, former President of Finland, Mr. David Harland, Mr. Nasser Judeh, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Algeria, Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Republic of Nigeria, Ms. Roza Otunbayeva, former President of Kyrgyzstan, Mr. Gert Rosenthal, former Minister of Planning and Foreign Minister and Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the United Nations,Mr. Juan Gabriel Valdés, former Foreign Minister of Chile, former Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, as well as Heads of International Organizations, Ambassadors accredited in Ankara and students of political sciences also attended the Conference.

Secretary General of the Turkic Council Baghdad Amreyev delivered a speech as a panelist in the First Session about the Role of Regional and International Organizations in Peace and Mediation.

Secretary General in his speech highlighted the experiences of the Member States of the Turkic Council in the field of mediation and their efforts to contribute to peace and development within and beyond their region.

Baghdad Amreyev also emphasized that building on the foreign policy priorities of its Member States, the Turkic Council, as a young and dynamic international organization attributes utmost importance to the international regional mediation efforts, strengthening its relations with the UN and its specialized organizations and declared the desire to cooperate with the Group of Friends of Mediation. He expressed the desire of the Turkic Council to contribute to the efforts in undertaking mediation activities for the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as developing initiatives and projects to maintain positive agenda in order to address possible source of conflict among the parties.

Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt, Principal Strategic Adviser to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Rauf Engin Soysal, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Turkey to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and Ms. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, Member of the United Nations Standby Team of Mediation Experts have participated in the First panel session, moderated by Mr. Itonde Kakoma, Program director of the “Crisis Management Initiative” Group.
