The Secretary General of the Turkic Council Ambassador Ramil Hasanov attended the opening ceremony of Northern Marmara Motorway and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge on 26 August 2016.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Turkey H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister H.E. Binali Yıldırım as well as following international guests; King of Bahrain H.E. Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Presidential Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina H.E. Bakir Izetbegovic, President of Macedonia H.E. Gjorge Ivanov, President of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus H.E. Mustafa Akıncı, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan Oqtay Asadov, Prime Minister of Bulgaria H.E. Boyko Borisov, Prime Minister of Punjab Province of Pakistan H.E. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia H.E.Rasim Ljajic, First Deputy Prime Minister of Georgia H.E. Dimitri Kumsisihvili. Ministers of Transport and Economy of many countries also participated in the ceremony.

When evaluated within the framework of the transport cooperation, which is one of the most important fields of activity under the Turkic Council, Yavuz Sultan Selim bridge constitutes one of the most important pillars of Central Transport Corridor passing through the Member Countries of the Turkic Council on East-West trade line. Yavuz Sultan Selim bridge is the widest suspension bridge in the world with a width of 59 meters and the longest spanning one that has a rail system on it, with a main span of 1408 meters. Another first of the bridge is that it is the suspension bridge with the highest tower of the world, with a height of more than 322 meters.
